CIPLE – Initial Certificate of Portuguese as a Foreign Language

The CIPLE exam certifies A2-level proficiency in Portuguese according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

It assesses a candidate’s ability to communicate in basic, everyday situations and is designed for both general and limited professional or educational interactions.

A school version exists for candidates aged 12-15, with adapted content.

This exam validates basic Portuguese skills, useful for daily life, work, and education.


Exam Structure

The exam consists of three components:

1. Reading and Written Production & Interaction (45% of total score, 1h 15min)

  • Understanding basic texts (e.g., signs, menus, schedules, news articles, instructions).
  • Filling out forms (e.g., hotel check-in, bank registration).
  • Writing short messages (e.g., letters, postcards, informal requests).

2. Listening (30% of total score, 30min)

  • Understanding common social interactions (greetings, instructions, invitations).
  • Comprehending basic information in professional, travel, or emergency contexts.
  • Recognizing automated messages (e.g., phone recordings).

3. Oral Production & Interaction (25% of total score, 15min per candidate pair)

  • Engaging in basic conversations (introductions, ordering food, asking for directions).
  • Handling routine transactions (hotels, shops, banks).
  • Responding in simple emergencies (health issues, help requests).
  • Discussing personal experiences and current events at a basic level.

Grading System

  • Very Good: 85% – 100%
  • Good: 70% – 84%
  • Sufficient: 55% – 69%

Exam Dates

Held internationally in May, July, and November and nationally as CIPLE-P (Portugal).
