DEPLE – Elementary Diploma of Portuguese as a Foreign Language

The DEPLE exam certifies B1-level proficiency in Portuguese according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

It assesses a candidate’s ability to communicate in everyday, professional, and educational settings, particularly in predictable situations.

A school version is available for candidates aged 12-15, with age-appropriate content.

The DEPLE certifies a functional level of Portuguese, allowing candidates to navigate daily, work, and study-related interactions with increasing independence.


Exam Structure

The exam consists of four components:

1. Reading (25% of total score, 30min)

  • Understanding menus, adverts, brochures, news articles, letters, and reports.
  • Identifying food labels, medication instructions, and forms.
  • Recognizing information relevant to work or studies.

2. Written Production & Interaction (25% of total score, 1h)

  • Writing notes, postcards, personal letters, and institutional messages.
  • Filling out forms that require event descriptions (e.g., accident reports).
  • Writing routine professional letters, meeting summaries, and informal work messages.
  • Taking basic notes in academic settings.

3. Listening (25% of total score, 40min)

  • Understanding social interactions, directions, schedules, and services (e.g., hotels, banks, healthcare).
  • Comprehending public announcements, radio news, and lecture topics.
  • Following work-related instructions and feedback.

4. Oral Production & Interaction (25% of total score, 20min per candidate pair)

  • Engaging in basic social exchanges (greetings, requests, opinions, complaints).
  • Handling common transactions (accommodation, shopping, restaurants, transportation, banking).
  • Requesting information in tourist, professional, or academic settings.
  • Communicating in emergency situations (accidents, medical needs).

Grading System

  • Very Good: 85% – 100%
  • Good: 70% – 84%
  • Sufficient: 55% – 69%

Exam Format

  • Reading – 30 minutes
  • Writing – 1 hour
  • Listening – 40 minutes
  • Oral Exam – 20 minutes (scheduled with the exam center)
