The DAPLE exam certifies B2-level proficiency in Portuguese, recognizing an advanced level of fluency.
Candidates at this level can confidently and creatively use Portuguese in oral and written contexts, including both predictable and unpredictable situations.
They demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between language and culture, recognizing idiomatic expressions, culturally specific speech acts, and appropriate forms of communication.
This level enables candidates to work and study in Portuguese-speaking environments, whether Portuguese is the primary language of communication or simply a working language.
The DAPLE certifies an advanced level of Portuguese, allowing candidates to work, study, and communicate effectively in complex environments while demonstrating linguistic creativity and cultural awareness.
Exam Structure
The exam consists of four components:
1. Reading (90 min)
- Understanding press articles, everyday texts, and professional documents.
- Comprehending educational materials, though difficulties may arise with abstract or culturally rich texts.
2. Written Production & Interaction (90 min)
- Writing formal and informal texts, including requests, complaints, reports, and academic texts.
- Taking lecture notes and summarizing written sources.
- Rewriting sentences to enhance linguistic accuracy.
3. Listening (40 min)
- Understanding informal discussions, radio/TV debates, interviews, and cultural programs.
- Following films and plays, though difficulties may persist with speech rhythm, lexicon, and cultural references.
- Comprehending seminars, lectures, and work meetings, albeit with challenges in non-standard pronunciation and complex topics.
4. Oral Production & Interaction (25 min per candidate pair)
- Engaging fluently in informal and professional exchanges.
- Expressing ideas effectively and using humor when appropriate.
- Presenting problems and solutions convincingly.
- Participating in seminars, meetings, and phone conversations.
- Understanding nuances and implied meanings, though complex cultural references may still pose challenges.
Grading System
- Very Good: 85% – 100%
- Good: 70% – 84%
- Sufficient: 55% – 69%

- Reading – 90 minutes
- Writing – 90 minutes
- Listening – 40 minutes
- Oral Exam – 25 minutes (scheduled with the exam center)
